Broadband Speed Mapped for BBC Look East Research

BBC Look East is calling for people in the East of England to find out their home broadband speed, as part of the TV programme's week-long special - using our free SurveyMapper tool, at CASA, University College London, to collate and map the results in real time. So far over 6500 responses have been received.
It is estimated only 60% of households in the region have access to high speed broadband.
Look East's business reporter Richard Bond said that the figure was unlikely to grow much in the next five years.
Home broadband users can take part by plotting their speed onto an interactive map.
The results of the research will then be shown on BBC One during Look East's broadband week, which runs from 21 to 25 February 2011.
"Fibre optic networks, the key to a fast service, are only available to people in and around the major towns and cities," said Mr Bond.
"Broadband speeds in rural areas are slow because they depend on copper telephone exchanges.
"Although BT is rolling out its fibre optic network, this is unlikely to make much of a difference to most rural communities over the next five years," he added.
Speed test
Broadband users can test their upload speed on BBC News' Technology website.
As broadband speeds on the same connection can fluctuate, it is recommended that people take the test several times and make a note of the highest speed.
Other speed-testing websites could return different results, so it is recommended for this research that third-party sites are avoided.
Once a figure is obtained, people can then plot their results on the BBC Look East map hosted on our SurveyMapper.
It is nice to see maps and indeed crowd sourced surveys used in such a way, SurveyMapper has been developed as part of NeISS (National e-Infrastructure for Social Simulation, funded by JISC as part of its Information Environment Programme.
You can set up your own survey or poll on SurveyMapper - If you have used other ‘polling sites’ then you will be up to speed, except we have taken away the restrictions and added real-time mapping into the mix. Simply sign up (its free) and then your be able to create your own survey and embed it into your own site. Currently we have five levels of survey available - Worldwide, based on countries, European Countries US Zip Code, UK Postcode and a Drag and Drop Pin Map.

You can ask anything, survey the nation, the world or just your street with real-time mapping and statistics.

The Look East survey runs until February 25th with updates each evening on BBC Look East News.

SurveyMapper: Now with Embed Survey

Creating a survey tool kit with real-time mapping and the ability to gather data down to country, continent, zip or postcode level along with the ability to drag and drop pins is all well and good, but it needs the ability to take the survey and put it direct into your own site. This is now possible with 1.2 of SurveyMapper.

Released today SurveyMapper 1.2 allows anyone to embed a survey, questionnaire or poll directly into their site and view the real-time results - by way of example:

Under each survey your see the ability to 'Embed Survey', simply type in your required width/height and copy and paste the code directly into your page.

We hope you like version 1.2, head over to http://www.surveymapper.com to take part in the current surveys, set up your own or grab a survey and put it on your site.

Survey Data, Simulation and Workflows

At the moment we are locked away in a room at the University of Leeds talking about the next steps to integrate survey data, traditional data and simulation output via grid based services.

It's going to be interesting - pictured below is a first step with SurveyMapper running in MyExperiment:

Shortly you will be able to run a population reconstruction model, complete with crowd based data input with a view of gaining an insight of future transport, health and housing needs. Mixing crowd sourced data with simulation and modelling provides a new and interesting step in spatial analysis...

SurveyMapper - How Happy are You? A Global Survey

Do you want to know what people are think about that new town plan, do you want to ask peoples views on a new product, perhaps you are carrying out a straw poll or do you want to collect data to input into a scientific model? If the questions can be asked or surveyed, all you need is SurveyMapper.

The beta release of SurveyMapper, a free real-time geographic survey and polling tool from the nice people at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, University College London, is looking like it is only a few weeks away. If you have used other ‘polling sites’ then you will be up to speed, except we have taken away the restrictions and added real-time mapping into the mix.

We currently have the UK covered down to postcode level (that’s the level of your street), the world divided into countries with a higher level of detail coming soon.

As part of the move towards Beta and allowing people to set up their own questions, we have created a test survey to find the worlds happiest nation (this allows us to test the global mapping function).

To take part head over to SurveyMapper.com and then select Current Surveys - thanks a lot if you do take part.

Digital Urban Survey: Moving to a .Com or .Org?

Its been over five years now and with a series of new project such as TalesofThings, SurveyMapper and the Masters Course in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation the blog is looking like it might need a new home.

We have three choices at the moment, one is to move to a .com - digitalurban.com is sadly taken by a name holder who wants $600, so that's out. However, we do have the option to move to digital-urban.com. The second is to embrace the nature of digitalurban and make it a .org. The domain digitalurban.org was very kindly purchased and passed on to us by the nice people at the Redfish Group in Santa Fe. The final choice is to leave things as is and carry on regardless with .blogspot.com.

Any changes we make will not affect your bookmarks or links as Blogger allows a quick and easy way to change domains but keep the system. The only direct change will be all the 'retweets' will jump back to '0' as they are tied to the direct link.

As such we thought we would throw the question open to you, the readers. The survey will only take a couple of seconds to complete and it will also help us test out the 'world mapping' system over at SurveyMapper which is about to enter open Beta.

So .com/.org or leave it as is: http://www.surveymapper.com/response.aspx?id=30

Thanks a lot if you do take part, it all helps us shape the next stage of digital urban.

We will be rolling out to Europe shortly and then moving over to the United States and after that the World allowing surveys and polls down to building level.

As part of the move towards Beta and allowing people to set up their own questions, we have created a test Public Perception of Crime Survey for the UK. It only takes seconds to complete and it will help us make sure our custom written real-time mapping system is operational.

Coming Soon from the CASA Team - SurveyMapper

As promised some more details on our second project coming out of recent grants here at CASA, University College London and digital urban - SurveyMapper. We can't say too much at the moment, but its custom written from the ground up and and could be quite a useful tool for anyone wanting to undertake a survey, complete with locational mapping while maintaining access to the raw data.

In short, its real-time mapping, crowd sourcing, model validation, spatial analysis and name of the giraffe? - Meet 'Roger'. Sometimes science and geography don't have to be 'academic', with this one we have hidden the science firmly behind the scenes, but it really is quite clever. SurveyMapper is part of the NeISS project (National e-Infrastructure for Social Simulation) and has been funded by the JISC via its Information Environment Programme.
